Real Answers About The Safety of Eyelash Glue: Formaldehyde

For years now there have been rumors buzzing about the dangers of super/medical grade glue when used on your eyes.  Believe me, this has been a concern to all eyelash extension techs who care for their own safety as well as that of their clients.  The truth is that as techs, we are exposed to a lot more fumes than our clients considering that we do this all day long while a client is only in our chair once month for one hour. Of course, there are more concerns for the client's safety if the adhesive comes in contact with their skin on regular basis. This is where the importance of an experience and careful tech is paramount.

In view of this I wanted to share an article I came across that familiarizes all of the layman and women out there with the dangers of Cyanoacrylates which are the main ingredient in this widely used glue.

Below you will find a link to this article.  Please take some time to read it and acquaint yourself with pros and cons of eyelash extensions. An educated client is the best client in my opinion.

The Natural Way

We've all heard of eyelash extensions by now haven't we ladies?! It's been a good ten year run. And it's only getting better...or should I say the Lash techs are getting better?  Let's hope so, however, for those who are still unable to tell the difference between a great set of lashes and a totally fake, completely embarrassing, "you are going to loose your natural lashes if you don't stop soon" kind of lash job here are a few pointers.

FIRST, you might be tempted to get a much, much longer eyelash extension, a word of professional advice-DON'T. These babies are already so much thicker, longer and denser than anything you currently have on your eyes that there's just no need for that EXTRA length.

SECOND, ask the eyelash tech how many lashes per eye she considers a full set.  The fewer the number the spindlier they will look. Combine spindlier plus longer and you've got a walking disaster. Here at My Lash Girl Eyelash Extensions a full set is 120-140 lashes per eye.  That's every single extendable lash! REMEMBER, there is a reason some people charge you $35-$65 a set...you are not getting what you are hoping for.

THIRD, call me if you have any questions, really!

Why You Want Eyelash Extensions in the Summer.

I was visiting Dana Point, CA last week for a well deserved vacation when my little sister whipped out her professional camera and started snapping photos of my family.  Later that day I was browsing the pictures on my mom's 27 inch iMAC and came across a few shots of my daughter's downcast eyes.  Over the years I have had more than one client express concern that their extensions are not "visible enough" and ask me whether they should "go longer".  So here are a few shots of what your lashes might look like to someone else.  It is a prospective that we, the extension wearers, do not usually have so enjoy and next time you are on the beach or in a pool remember that YOUR make up will always look perfect. XOXO

Some funky Purple and Blue Extensions

So, I love, love, love all my clients. I can honestly say that there isn't one person I don't enjoy seeing and catching up with. To be fair, some of them come for a much needed respite from children, jobs and other worldly worries and prefer to take a nap while getting their eyelash extensions. Then there are others that come with interesting stories filled with drama of everyday living. I am
good with either type. Then there is Nichole. I love Nichole despite her naps and little conversation. Nichole brings excitement to my job. You see, she is not afraid to experiment. Last time I saw her she didn't just want purple extensions on the outside corners of her eyes. She wanted purple and blue ones mixed in throughout her whole lash line. I felt like I was working on a show for Lunatic Fringe. Absolutely loved it! Here are the magnificent results.

Perfect Eyelash Extensions

Ladies, these might not be perfect pictures but they certainly are perfect lashes! This is a beautiful client of mine named Khrystie. She kindly allowed me to post these pictures of her newly touched up lashes. This is her 3rd touch up and she is loving her lash extensions. Just some food for thought here: your lash extensions should always look great, not just the first time you get them done. If they only looked great the first time and went downhill from there than come see me. I'll fix them.

Why Yes, Eyelash Extensions ARE Worth Every Penny

Glamour Magazine

Wednesday, 09/ 2/2009 at 3:04 PM Comments (53)

So. Yesterday, I got lash extensions for the first time. There is a lot I could say about the whole experience--you know how I love to ramble on--but I think my before-and-after pics are going to do most of the talking for me. Check 'em out.

I actually have a lot of lashes, and they're pretty long. But apparently, there was still much room for improvement. Just look at these before-and-after pics, taken from above.

Notice the gap in my lashes in the before shot? Crazy--I always just thought that resulted from me crimping my lashes weird when curling them. Now, not only is the gap filled in, I don't even need my trusty curler, for the first time in my entire life. Nor do I need mascara or eyeliner--it looks like my eyes are completely made-up already.

I decided to get the extensions since I'm getting hitched in the boondocks this weekend and am using a pretty low-key makeup person at the wedding resort. Thus, I'd rather not fuss with glue-on faux lashes the morning of. Instead, I called up Baze's very favorite lash-extensions guru, Cheri of Lash Boutique (she uses Xtreme Lashes, a popular brand).

A few more photos of the thick, long lashes she created for me ...

In summary: Yes, quality lash extensions cost a quajillion dollars (a.k.a. $300 and up). But good ones last a couple months, and if you have a bunch of important events on your calendar, I think they are SO worth it.

I could probably sit here for an hour detailing the whole lash-extension experience, but instead, how about we start a little convo in the comments field below. Share your questions about fancy faux lashes, and I'll do my best to answer them, or I'll relay the toughies to Cheri herself. Fire away, girls!

Some More Pics of Eyelash Extensions

What Your Lashes Might Look Like After 6 Months of Extensions.

This is my client from Studio 603. She has been getting Eyelash Extensions from My Lash Girl since June of 2009 (7 months). This last time she went too long between her touch ups and ended up with just a few extensions left. She decided to get a brand new set of Eyelash Extensions so at her appointment I removed the left over extensions and started a new set. These pictures are a testament to what your natural lashes "should" look like after you are done with extensions. She did pretty well, meaning, she is not a picker (a person who picks at their extensions) and considering the length of her Eyelash Extensions (12-14mm) her lashes are in top shape.

Special Occasions

I wanted to add some pictures forwarded to me by a darling client who just got married. These are her wedding photos with emphasis on her lashes! This girl is beautiful with or without Eyelash Extensions but it was nice to feel beautiful on her honeymoon with no makeup on and still looking stunning!

Eyelash Extensions in Color

'Tis the season...to be wild! You can have some serious fun with your extensions. At My Lash Girl we carry brown, green, yellow, blue, red and purple extensions. These can be successfully blended with your black extensions to create a more festive look. For blonds, brown extensions might be a color of preference since it complements their natural complexion and hair color but regardless of your coloring we say "GO WILD!"

Extension Horrors

I have now had two people with terrible eyelash extension experiences. Neither one received their extensions from me but I now have them as faithful clients because I was able to show them a better way to extend lashes.

Both, incidentally, went to the same Salt Lake Salon to receive their "cluster extensions". Those are of course not the true extensions because they are not glued individually onto your lashes but, instead are placed on top of your lash line in a clump. It takes just a few of these clumps to fill your lash line and the average price for this service is about $40. The client will then come in about once a week and more clumps will be glued on top of the left over existing ones.

The picture I have here is that of a seventeen year old girl after a month of "cluster extensions". She called me in a panic on a Monday saying she got my number from a salon her mom goes to and wouldn't I please remove her eyelash extensions. She told me where she got them and that she hated them because not only do they look very fake but they are also ripping out her lashes. When I saw this girl three days later for an eyelash removal appointment I thought that ugly would be an understatement when describing this extension job. I could see that this mess of clusters was all stuck together and on the outside corner of her right eye the clusters had come away from her lash line with all of her natural lashes ripped out with their roots.

It took about twenty minutes of gentle work with a special eyelash adhesive remover and in the end her lash line was free of the clusters but, alas, it was free of her own lashes as well.

None the less, this girl was ecstatic to have the awful mess removed and believe it or not, she did indeed look better lash less than she did with the clusters.

It will be about six month before she has her lashes back and in the mean time she knows not to go to a salon on Highland drive located next to Excape Day Spa and Riches Bagels that stars with Hair...

My other client after using an eyelash growth product for a year was able to get real eyelash extensions done by My Lash Girl and is now a very happy lady.

Please note that "clusters" are not eyelash extensions and will damage your lashes indefinitely.
